Nicolas Calvo is a jazz bassist based in the Charlotte, North Carolina area, now in his third year with the JazzArts Charlotte All-Stars. Selected through a competitive process, he performs with an ensemble that brings together some of the region’s most accomplished young jazz musicians. His continuing role in the All-Stars is central to his development as an artist, combining advanced repertoire, professional mentorship, and live performance experience.
A double bassist whose work spans jazz standards and Latin jazz, Nicolas also performs with Nuestro Tiempo Latin Jazz Orchestra and Queen City Jazz Collective. With the Collective, he contributes both onstage and behind the scenes, helping manage the ensemble, coordinate rehearsals, and book performances. He was selected for the UNCG High School Honors Band in 2024.
Nicolas has studied jazz theory, improvisation, and ear training with Lovell Bradford through the JazzArts All-Stars. His training also includes instruction from bassist Rodney Whitaker at the Brevard Summer Jazz Institute and jazz arranging with Timothy Newman at the William Paterson Summer Jazz Workshop. He has earned merit-based scholarships from JazzArts Charlotte and William Paterson University’s Summer Jazz Workshop.
Through his ensemble work and ongoing studies, Nicolas continues to develop his musical voice, with improvisation, collaboration, and a deepening understanding of jazz at the heart of his practice.
